David’s FIDE World Championship Play of the Day: Game 8

David Howell's Play of the Day: Game 8

Ian Nepomniachtchi goes into the rest day with his FIDE World Championship hanging by a thread after a disastrous blunder in Game 8 let Magnus Carlsen stretch his lead to 5-3.

The Norwegian is now hot favourite to convert his advantage as his Russian rival is left needing four points from the remaining six games just to take it to tiebreaks.

Game 8 was catastrophic for Nepo. In his daily analysis sessions, Meltwater Champions Chess Tour commentator David Howell picks over what went wrong in his Play of the Day:

The World Championship is tough. It’s really brutal emotionally with its ups and downs, and it’s part of what makes it exciting and also extremely tough.

Play will resume with Game 9 on Tuesday with commentary from David and the Tour team broadcast live on chess24.
