Bilbao Masters

Bilbao Chess 2014 will be held from 14 to 20 September at Euskalduna Conference Center and Concert Hall, in the center of Bilbao. The 7th Grand Slam Masters Final is held in parallel with the 30th European Club Cup and features a double-round robin between four of the best players in the world: World #2 Levon Aronian won the Masters Final last year (as well as in 2009). Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand lost the title to Magnus Carlsen in 2013 and will fight him for it again in November. Rounding out the field are Francisco Vallejo, the Spanish Champion, and Ruslan Ponomariov, who in 2002, at the age of 18, became the youngest FIDE World Champion in history. The rate of play will be 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes to finish the game, with 10 extra seconds per move from move number 41. The event uses a scoring system like that of soccer (3 points per win, 1 per draw, 0 per loss.)
