Almasi is an eight-time Hungarian Champion, but has spent his career largely
overshadowed by his younger compatriots Judit Polgar and Peter Leko. He gained
the grandmaster title at age 17 when he also won the U18 World Youth
Championship. His later achievements include winning clear first at the Reggio
Emilia tournament in 2007-8 and losing out only on tiebreaks the following year
to Gata Kamsky. He also won the European Rapid Championship in 2010 without
losing a game. As a team player he’s represented Hungary at ten Olympiads,
winning a team silver medal in 2002 and an individual silver medal in 2010 for
his performance on board 2. Although his rating has varied wildly over his
career he’s been on the rise in his mid-30s, and in 2011 he was briefly in the
world Top 20 and ranked above Leko and Polgar.
