Artemiev was taught to play by his father at the age of 7. Although he says he wasn’t interested at first he soon returned to the game and began to demonstrate his talent. By the age of 10 he appeared on the FIDE rating lists at 2046 and he first really started to make a name for himself at 14 in 2012. He won the World’s Youth Stars tournament on tiebreaks ahead of 19-year-old Vladimir Belous, starred for the gold-medal-winning Russian team in the U16 Olympiad and beat Russian Champion Dmitry Andreikin and Sanan Sjugirov on his way to losing the final of the Russian Rapid Grand Prix to the vastly experienced Alexey Dreev. In 2013 Artemiev repeated his triumph at the Youth Stars tournament while showing he’d already outgrown the competition – his stunning 10.5/11 left him 2.5 points ahead of his closest rival.

Vladislav Artemiev at the 2012 Russian Higher League: "In chess I dream of three things: getting 2800 and winning Wijk aan Zee and the Tal Memorial. It's hard to become World Champion and I worry I won't. You need to win a match for that? Anand will soon be beaten, though maybe by the time I strengthen Carlsen will be getting old?"
