Irene learned to play chess as a 9-year-old at the insistence of her older brother Javier and hasn't stopped collecting titles since. She's already an 8 times Spanish Champion (U12, 14, 16 and 18) and had a spectacular 2013, winning bronze in the U16 European Championship and finishing runner-up in the World Championship in the same age category. She also made her debut for the full Spanish women's team in the European Team Championship in Warsaw.
Her chess development has been full of ups and downs, but at the age of 16 Irene seems to have acquired the experience and maturity required to make a big leap forward in 2014.
