Magnus Carlsen and Kateryna Lagno are the top seeds for the FIDE Online Steinitz Memorial blitz tournament that begins this Friday, with the full line-ups and pairings now released. The two 10-player events feature 18 rounds of action with live commentary in multiple languages here on chess24. That’s not all, as the players will be appearing in short Banter Blitz sessions, starting with Anton Korobov at 13:00 CEST today, so you have the chance to challenge them to a game.
Wilhelm Steinitz was the 1st undisputed World Chess Champion from 1886-1894, and to celebrate his birthday tomorrow FIDE and chess24 have combined to put on a 3-day blitz tournament featuring the 16th undisputed World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen. Magnus is a 5-time World Blitz Champion and the full line-up in the open section also features 3-time World Blitz Champion Alexander Grischuk, 2013 World Blitz Champion Le Quang Liem, established stars such as Peter Svidler and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and 19-year-old rising star Jeffery Xiong.
The first games in the open section begin at 18:30 CEST on Friday and you can find all the pairings below:
As you can see, Carlsen-Svidler in Round 1 is a repeat of a match-up we saw twice during the Online Nations Cup, when Peter Svidler was playing Banter Blitz against a certain “MagzyBogues”:
You’ll be able to play Peter and more of the Steinitz Memorial players in short Banter Blitz sessions (the contract only specifies 3 games per player), beginning with one of the world’s most original top chess players, Anton Korobov, at 13:00 CEST:
The schedule so far (this will be updated) is as follow:
For Peter and Alexander Grischuk that will be a break from the Play for Russia Charity Blitz Tournament taking place from 12-14 May. Alexander is currently leading on 5.5/7 after beating Vladimir Kramnik, his closest pursuer (5/7) and the tournament organiser:
Kateryna Lagno is the clear top seed in the women’s section. As well as being the world’s no. 1 rated women’s blitz player (2608 compared to Hou Yifan’s 2601) she’s also the Women’s World Blitz Champion for both 2018 and 2019. It’s not going to be easy, however, since her opponents include former Women’s World Champions Alexandra Kosteniuk, Antoaneta Stefanova and Tan Zhongyi. Here are the complete pairings:
The games begin at 15:00 CEST on Friday, with the women playing before the men each day. They’ll also be playing some Banter Blitz, with the schedule currently as follows (again, we’ll update this as we get more details):
