What makes these side events even more exciting is that they have attracted a handful of titled players, and even the USA coach - current world number 12 Wesley So - has made an appearance. A few of the Olympiad teams have also chosen to warm up for the day's play, and try to pick up some spending money, by competing in these events.
The second event was a good example of what to expect, with over a dozen nations represented – two GMs, 4 IMs ... and one Norwegian MP in the field. So far it seems that IM Vladimir Poley from Belarus, and Russian GM Maxim Turov, currently living and training juniors in Norway, are making a serious bid for the prizes for the overall series, having turned up for all the blitz tournaments to date.
