On Sunday, May 31st, a team from NYC battled a team from Singapore to raise relief funds for #ChessAgainstCovid - a drive initiated by GM Kevin Goh of Singapore.
The match was played on 36 boards, on chess24:
Notable players included GM Joel Benjamin (former US Champion), GM John Fedorowicz, GM Irina Krush on the NY side, while Singapore brought new GM Kevin Goh, GM Andrey Kvon, and several faces who came out for the cause who have not played much recently such as GM Wu Shaobin and GM Meng K. Wong. The match was hotly contested, but in the end Singapore came out narrowly on top by 21 to 15 match points and 41 to 31 overall points. Irina Krush, in a post match interview, seemed eager for a rematch. Meanwhile Kevin Goh, captain and organizer for the Singapore squad, said:
I would like to thank all the players for this extremely engaging battle. Many of the games were exciting and could have gone either way. On behalf of ChessAgainstCovid and all the volunteers from the Singapore team, we would like to especially thank Professor Noah Chasin and his team from the Marshall Chess Club, Pascal, Sabina and Daniel for the entertaining commentary and chess24 for hosting the event. We look forward to hosting more meaningful chess events together during these difficult times. Lastly, a big thank you to chess enthusiasts, Mr. Zhang Changjie of Theme International Trading SPC, Mr. Joshua Lim, Mr. Lim See Wah of Oceanhealth and a generous anonymous donor for supporting Team Singapore by contributing a total of S$18,000 for our charity cause.
