Vasyl Ivanchuk, Boris Gelfand, Leinier Dominguez, Sam Shankland, Paco Vallejo, Sethuraman, Eduardo Iturrizaga and Alan Pichot make up for the field for the Ayelén Invitational, an 8-player rapid round-robin taking place today with a top prize of $2,000. The tournament is named after chess24's WIM Ayelén Martínez, who was instrumental in putting together this fun tournament to test out a few things before the upcoming Skilling Open.
The tournament, with players from 7 countries, begins at 18:00 CET and features 7 rounds of rapid chess with a time control of 10 minutes for all moves plus a 5-second increment from move 1. You can Go Premium using the voucher code AYELEN and get 40% off, while also helping to support such events in future!
The top seed on paper is Cuban-born Leinier Domínguez, who now represents the USA. He's the current world no. 14 in classical chess but ranked even higher at number 6 in rapid. It's not going to be easy, however!
Among the competition is Spanish no. 1 Paco Vallejo, who's currently enjoying life in Costa Rica.
Venezuela's Eduardo Iturizzaga and Argentina's Alan Pichot complete the Spanish-speaking contingent of the field.
The most interesting players in the event are perhaps two legends, Vasyl Ivanchuk and Boris Gelfand, who in the chess24 Legends of Chess earlier this year showed that they have no issues adapting to online chess. Ivanchuk, for instance, won a memorable game against World Champion Magnus Carlsen.
The field is completed by 2018 US Champion Sam Shankland and India's Sethuraman. Both players are not only strong grandmasters but also the authors of fine courses on Chessable:
The tournament will have commentary in multiple languages, with two choices in English: Ginger GM Simon Williams, or IMs Padmini Rout and Harshit Raja in a stream aimed at an Indian audience. Watch all the action here on chess24!
