Over the last month chess24 released a real treat for chess fans around the globe: an exclusive 10-hour video series for Premium members, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the 2021 World Chess Championship Match. Magnus Carlsen's seconds revealed details about the World Champion's preparation for his match against Ian Nepomniachtchi.
In Inside Team Magnus, Carlsen seconds Jan Gustafsson, Peter Heine Nielsen and Laurent Fressinet share details on how Magnus beat Ian Nepomniachtchi to win his fifth World Championship match.
The 10-hour video series is exclusively for chess24 Premium members and covers everything about the match, including backstage info, preparation, strategy, and how the team itself experienced the match. It also includes full analysis, by the team, of all 11 games.
10 out of the 16 videos have been released, with the remaining six to be released in the coming weeks.
The last episode published features the incredible Game 6!
In the first episode, the trio discuss what was one of the big secrets before and during the match: the members of Magnus Carlsen's team. On the day of Carlsen's triumph, the team was revealed to include Jorden van Foreest and Daniil Dubov in addition to Jan Gustafsson and Laurent Fressinet, who worked from Thailand, while Peter Heine Nielsen was in Dubai with Carlsen.
Another interesting section saw them discuss possible alternative team members, such as having the top five in the world. They contemplated names such as Vladimir Kramnik and, after some debate, addressed the elephant in the room.
LF: I am surprised we still didn't mention Anish Giri, I mean...
<silence and laughter>
PHN: That's always a good subject, of course.
JG: I am always pro-Anish, but it didn't seem realistic at that point that he would be interested in joining the team.
PHN: No. Well, Giri is a strong addition, any team would like that, but people have their own careers and such. It becomes always a debate like that. You can say the last couple of matches... before we had both Adams and Maxime... in that sense, we have lowered the standard a bit, you can argue. But we see it differently. We want to have very strong theoreticians, and we want to have people who have been with Magnus for a long time.
