The Chess Olympiad in Azerbaijan capital of Baku has begun!
On chess24 you can follow every move in every game (Open | Women) live with commentary in a choice of five languages. That's not all, though! New Premium Members can also give their membership a real boost with our Olympiad promotion. The trick is simply to pick an Open or Women's Olympiad team that you think might perform above expectations.
Who can take part?
Anyone who between 31st August und 14:00 CEST on 4 September (one hour into Round 3) takes out Premium Membership for one, two or three years. Please understand that long-term Premium Memberships that began before this date do not qualify.
What do I need to do?
Take out a new Premium Membership for one, two or three years, then tell us your pick by 14:00 CEST on September 4th using our contact form or by sending an e-mail to Customer Services at firstname.lastname@example.org. Don't forget to say whether your team is in the Open or Women's section. If it's not specified we'll assume you mean the Open competition.
How is the Premium bonus determined?
Your Premium Membership will receive a free extension if your team finishes higher in the final standings than it began on the starting rankings (seedings). The starting ranks are based on the ratings of the players and can be found here:
The better the team performs the longer the Premium extension. The length of the extension will be calculated as follows:
We'll round up in your favour.
In plain English?
Let's take an example. In 2014 Pakistan began as the 159th seeds but finished the tournament in 92nd place. That's 67 places above expectation, so that wouldn't have been a bad pick! You would have gained a free 23 months (1-year membership), 34 months (2-year membership) or even 67 months (3-year membership) extension to your Premium Membership.
Two years ago almost every other team naturally improved on their starting position! The chances of a big win grow when you don't pick the top teams, but an outsider.
