“This means a huge amount to us and really puts the Chess Olympiad on the map,” says Chairman of the Board, Herman Kristoffersen. “We know that the Crown Prince’s role will have a major impact on the prestige of the Chess Olympiad, both nationally and particularly internationally.”
Chess Olympiad Tromsø 2014, Tromsø City Council and Troms County Council jointly wrote a letter requesting royal patronage, dated November 5th, 2011. In a letter to the Chess Olympiad Tromsø 2014, the Royal House confirmed that Haakon, the Crown Prince, had accepted the invitation to be the Patron of the Chess Olympiad Tromsø 2014.
Few events receive royal patronage, and such patronage functions as a recognition of organisations and events within important sectors of the community.
With more than 150 participating countries, the Chess Olympiad is the world’s fourth largest sporting event. It is estimated that around 1500 chess players will participate in the championship and Tromsø 2014 has the ambition of gaining 100 million unique website viewers during the championship. The Chess Olympiad runs from August 1-14, 2014.
