Melanie grew up as the eldest of six children of chess-playing parents and first attended a chess club when she was 7. Her initial impressions were negative due to teasing from boys, though they had to accept she belonged when they could no longer compete with her at the board. Melanie’s haul of medals in junior events includes the German U14, U16 and U18 titles and her more than 50 appearances for the German national team saw her receive the German Chess Federation’s silver badge of honour at the age of only 20. Her best team performance was perhaps her unbeaten +5 at the 2011 European Team Championship. Melanie gained the Women’s Grandmaster title in 2012 and since 2010 has been studying Psychology at the University of Mannheim.
