Anatoly Karpov visited Tromsø for the opening weekend of the 2013 FIDE World Cup, where it was announced that he would be a new ambassador for the Chess Olympiad 2014. He participated in the opening ceremony in Tromsø on Saturday 10 August.

Anatoly Yevgenyevich Karpov is a Russian chess grandmaster and former World Champion. He was the official World Champion from 1975 to 1985, when he was defeated by Garry Kasparov. He became FIDE World Champion in 1993, and held that title until 1999. Karpov is universally considered one of the greatest players of all time.
