Wing Gambit

1. e4 e6 2. ♘f3 d5 3. e5 c5 4. b4 This pawns sacrifice characterizes the Wing Gambit. White wants to get a strong centre which Black cannot attack with ...c5.

4... d4! declines the sacrifice. Now White's pawn on e5 becomes a target that can be attacked with ...Nc6 and ...Ne7-g6. White, on the contrary, can attack the d4-pawn which can get vulnerable after the c-pawn is off the board.

4... c4 5. a3 a5 6. b5 White can fight for an edge.

5. bxc5

5. ♘a3 a6! prevents the knight from coming to b5. ( 5... cxb4 6. ♘b5 This is White's idea. 6... ♘c6 7. ♗b2 White has strong pressure against the pawn on d4. ) 6. b5 This is not dangerous because the pawn on d4 is well protected. ( 5... ♘c6 6. b5!+/= ) 6. bxc5 Since b5 is not possible any more, Black can place his b-knight on the ideal square c6. 7. ♕e2

7. ♗xc5 ♕xc5 The queen is well placed on c5. She defends d4 and attacks e5. Furthermore, she stops the development of the knight to a3. This variation is very contrete and it is important to know it well. 8. c3 ♘c6 9. cxd4 ( 9. ♕a4 ♗d7 ) 9... ♘xd4 10. ♕a4+ ♗d7! The key move. Black sacrifices the knight. 11. ♕xd4 ♕c1+ 12. ♔e2 ♗b5+

b) 13. d3 13... ♖d8 Attacks the queen. If the queen moves, the pawn on d3 is attacked. 14. ♘bd2 The only move. 14... ♕a3 A very uncommon situation. If Black plays precisely, he will reach a good position.
