Play the French

Introduction

GM Francisco 'Paco' Vallejo

Dear chessfriends,

my name is Francisco Vallejo and I am a chess grandmaster. In this ebook I will provide a French Defence repetoire for Black. Black starts the French Defence with the following moves:

1. e4 e6

We will investigate how Black can respond after

2. ♘f3

2. b3

2. d3 and

2. ♕e2 .

The most important move is, of course,

2. d4 .We reply with

2... d5

First, we take a look at the exchange variantion.

3. exd5 exd5

At this point I recommend a variation that allows Black to play for a win.

Secondly, we cover the move

3. ♘d2 . I advise you to immediately fight for the centre by playing

3... c5 .

Thirdly, we instigate the advance variation

3. e5

which is often played by old people, hoping to surprise Black.

Last but not least, the move

3. ♘c3

is investigated. This is the most important and most aggressive approach.

I wish you a lot of fun and hope that you can learn a lot from the explanations.
